Organized Tools in Garage

Combine the popularity of the Marie Kondo decluttering movement and a fresh start with the new year and it’s the perfect time to tackle organization as one of your New Year’s resolutions.  If you’re like most American’s, there are many areas that might benefit from some decluttering… your closet, your kitchen catch-all drawer, your personal life… and your garage.  Your garage may or may not be a space you see every day, but with a little bit of straightening and planning, you can quickly turn it into a spot that you will use on a regular basis, and for far more than just storing life’s overflow.  Imagine, more room and a space that is appealing every time you walk through.  Added benefit:  you’ll be reducing potential safety hazards and might find some things you’d forgotten you ever owned!  Here are some tips from the experts at HouseLogic:

1.    Your garage is likely home to a variety of odds and ends, from tools to holiday décor, to unused household items.  Instead of leaving these items in piles to collect dust, try organizing them off of the floor.  Installing shelving systems and utilizing clear stackable bins can help you to organize and easily ascertain what’s where.

2.    When you install shelving systems, you will have created more space with room for storage underneath the shelves, making the perfect spot to store larger items like a shop vac, your kid’s scooter or a beach cart. You can also utilize some of this floor space for rolling storage.  Consider dedicating carts to store certain categories of things… a cart for yardwork, a cart for camping, a cart for outdoor entertaining. This will keep your things neatly arranged and they will be conveniently ready for you to roll outside or to your vehicle when you’re ready to use them.

3.    If you don’t opt for clear storage containers, consider color-coordinating your bins to systematize your storage process.  In addition to organization you can have some fun with the color and create a stylish look.  Take your storage game to the next level with some decorative labels to identify your colorful bins.

4.    Install pegboards on your otherwise empty walls. Using pegboard can give you a variety of options for various hooks and shelves, providing a great way to contain and organize otherwise loose and seemingly random items such as tools and yard implements.  You can organize your tools by size, shape, or category and take advantage of that otherwise wasted space.

5.    Have fun with the process and create a stylish approach to your organization. While the garage might not be the first place you think of expressing your style, think of the potential for symmetry, shape and color… having a stylish approach to your garage storage and workspaces might inspire to help you keep them neat and looking nice.

6.    Systematize your garage by designating specific zones to store items by their function.  This will make it easier to locate things for future use.

Maximizing the use of your garage space by utilizing the walls, installing shelving and taking advantage of the under-shelving area will help you get the most out of your garage. In addition to having an appealingly de-cluttered and well-organized space you will also have room to tackle your next DIY project or maybe even park your car (or two)!
