Berkeley County has recently experienced phenomenal growth with the news of Gerber & Volvo investing in the construction of production facilities and the trend continues as Charlotte-based developer The Keith Corporation and Chicago-based investor Singerman Real Estate prepare for the groundbreaking of the new Charleston Trade Center this Tuesday, April 19th. The groundbreaking will be for a new $19 million shell building, the beginning phase of the $175 million, 750-acre Trade Center located along Interstate 26 in Berkeley County. “We are delighted to be working with Berkeley County, the State of South Carolina and the South Carolina Ports Authority to recruit jobs and investment to this region,” Alan Lewis, Industrial Development Partner of The Keith Corporation, told the Berkeley Observer. “With the new Sheep Island Interchange under construction and the imminent completion of the Panama Canal expansion project, we feel the timing for the development of Charleston Trade Center is excellent.”
Last month there was a groundbreaking for the Sheep Island project. This project will connect Interstate 26 with Nexton Boulevard, providing easier access for Nexton homeowners. This project is estimated to be complete in the summer of 2018. This improved access, in conjunction with the new Trade Center, will allow for increased international trade, as well as accommodating the growing manufacturing industry in Berkeley County. This will all contribute to the growth and health of the Charleston port. “The investment ... is further proof that Berkeley County is open for business and Berkeley County means business,” Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler stated. He said the county welcomes “the new additional investment and jobs it will bring in the very near future.”
