“Must haves” items in a home have changed drastically over the years and the new homes being built today reflect the latest and greatest in exactly what new homebuyers are shopping for. Builders invest largely in market research, discovering what is important to new home buyers and what new home features would help improve the livability of the home, complimenting buyers lifestyles. One of the great advantages of new construction is that you can benefit from the hard work builders have invested making homes live smartly and move into a home that fits you perfectly, no tweaking or updates required! Curious about what’s hot on the “must have” list?
It’s not surprising that priorities would vary from generation to generation but the overall “must-have’s” are startlingly similar across the board. The National Association of Home Builders recently released the results of a survey polling millennials, Generation Xers, Baby Boomers and seniors. Across the board, the answer revolves around energy, cost-saving efficiency and improved organization. When NAHB’s assistant vice president for survey research, Rose Quint was asked what features buyers are looking for in a new home, she answered: “those that help them save energy and keep the home organized. ENERGY STAR® appliances and windows, insulation higher than required by code, a laundry room, garage storage, and a walk-in pantry are features that would positively influence the purchase decision of 80% or more of all home buyers. Also high on buyers’ most wanted list are exterior lighting, a patio, a full bath on the main level, and hardwood on the main level of the home.”
The good news is that if you visit any Charleston area new construction neighborhood, you’re sure to find these features (and more!). A quick search of communities will reveal a bevy of energy efficient features that come standard in new homes, as well as design options such as hardwood floors in the main living area that are also standard in many homes. Builders also often offer an array of options to personalize homes so that they live efficiently and allow you to use space in the manner that best suits your needs, helping you stay organized and comfortable.
