Recent growth in Berkeley County has changed the landscape on the outskirts of Summerville from rural land to a bustling suburb that is home to a multitude of new home communities and international businesses. The region’s growth was heralded by the arrival of a new Volvo production facility that is slated to open by years end. The Charleston Regional Business Journal reported US Census Bureau Data that ranks Berkeley County as the 17th fastest growing county in the country—Berkeley County growth matches the combined growth of both Charleston and Dorchester counties. As new business opportunities have arisen in the area, so have vibrant new home communities that provide convenient and affordable options for those relocating from out of state or looking to live closer to their new jobs.
Berkeley County infrastructure is being expanded to meet this growing population demand, marked by the upcoming opening of the new exit 197 interchange on interstate I-26 in Summerville. Located at the Nexton community, this project involved widening I-26 and the construction of a new exit, creating a new access point for neighborhood residents. Coupled with a future project to widen Hwy 176, this interchange will benefit residents of multiple master-planned communities including Nexton, Cane Bay and Carnes Crossroads.
