Charleston has been garnering tremendous press recently as Travel + Leisure rated the Holy City as the “world’s best city” to visit. Last week, readers of Conde Nast Traveler voted Charleston as the “world’s friendliest city.” This echoes the sentiments of the state’s previous motor vehicle license tags, “smiling faces, beautiful places.” Conde Nast notes that many European tourists are heading to Charleston because word has spread about the tremendous food and stunning architecture. According to Conde Nast deputy digital editor Laura Redman, “It’s getting great press, and it’s having a moment.” Charleston’s legendary friendliness has not gone unnoticed in the past. It has been ranked as the nation’s friendliest city on several occasions over the last few years. Travel + Leisure picked Charleston as 2nd most friendly city in the world last year, coming in just behind Galway Ireland.
Conde Nast readers had several reasons why they chose Charleston:
“People speak to each other.”
“It has the charm of the South, the sophistication of the city, and a warmth and friendliness that is unmatched.”
“Everything in Charleston is perfectly designed for visitors to be comfortable, safe, and well taken care of. In short, even as the city grows, Southern hospitality lives.”
These sentiments will come as no surprise to those who call Charleston home. The city’s combination of history, natural beauty, food, retail, employment and housing opportunities create a lucrative combination that draw visitors in and keep local residents happy.
