One of the great benefits of owning a new construction home is that often they come with built-in smart technology that increases the homes efficiency and improves your quality of life. The risk of increasingly savvy digital hackers and the rise of more high-tech homes places these homes at an increased danger of virtual break-ins, potentially compromising everything from your credit card information to your baby monitor. Remodeling writer Lauren Hunter recently wrote an article looking at some ways to protect your smart home from a digital break-in.
Designing secure products is an increasing priority for many companies but it is also up to the individual using them to make sure they are doing so in a secure fashion. Make sure you are educated about your home security system and any potential weak points. Be aware that less expensive security systems you might install into your own home aren’t probably as secure as a more expensive one installed by a professional company. The following tips will help you hack-proof your home:
- Don’t stick with the default password that comes with a device, those are track-able. Change it to something more intricate. Most systems will then remember these passwords.
- Set up multiple networks to segregate your systems, thus they are not all vulnerable from the same source.
- Look into hard-coding with an integrator that operates at the level of the hardware address, limiting access to that particular hardware.
- Have a guest network available so that your primary password is never dispersed.
- If you plan on giving your password to a trade partner working in your home, ask their companies policies for securing and storing clients passwords. Only give your password out with caution.
