Spring and summer are the times in the South when yards garner the most attention. Grass grows at alarming speeds and by mid-summer weeds can take over a yard, seemingly overnight. Landscaping requires constant watering to combat the sun’s intense heat. This is the time of year when a well-cared for yard can looks it’s best with vibrant grass and flourishing flowers and plants. As you retire your lawnmower for the winter consider following these lawn-maintenance tips to have good-looking grass through the colder months and start out with a healthy yard and landscaping come spring:
Better Homes and Gardens recommends the following for the fall months:
- Perpetuate with the green by overseeding with Ryegrass. Bermuda grass is the predominate grass used in southern yards and it becomes dormant and brown in cooler winter months. Annual Ryegrass thrives during the winter and will add the green back to your yard. When the weather warms up the Bermuda grass will grow again, replacing the Ryegrass.
- Continue the battle with weeds. Using a pre-emergence herbicide in the fall to avoid winter weeds.
- Finish mowing in the fall but try to prevent the grass from growing too tall before it becomes dormant for the winter.
