In many markets proximity to public transportation can be a valuable factor for consideration when purchasing a new home. While traffic and commutes are a concern in the Lowcountry, the suggestion of avoiding traffic and reducing environmental impact by using public transportation is not often entertained.
And it is not part of the typical conversation homebuyers engage in when researching area new homes. But it is a topic that is increasingly on the radar in the Charleston area. If large-scale improvements are made to the area’s public transit, then it is a topic that will start to factor into homebuyer’s check-list’s as they begin to narrow down their neighborhood choices.
Transportation was one of the five key issues brought up during the launch of the Tri-County area’s 2014 Regional Score Card. It has been getting more coverage in the press and more discussion at the government level. Gabe Klein, the former Transportation director for Chicago and Washington DC was recently in Charleston to speak on the topic. Charleston Regional Business Journal quotes him as saying: “We have to get beyond the concept that more lanes and more parking equals less congestion. That’s 100% false.” While his plans were primarily focused towards improving peninsular Charleston, they have far-reaching impact for companies such as Boeing that are actively recruiting families; families that will potentially move to the Berkeley and Dorchester areas. He suggested that rather than building a new parking garage, the Charleston International Airport should invest in public transit.
Keep an eye on the press. Attend free talks and planning sessions. Reach out to your local elected officials. These are plans that will impact us all and that will have long-reaching benefit as the Lowcountry progresses into the future.
