Innovation happens where Commerce and Community meet- Berkeley County Innovation Corridor in Summerville

Berkeley County Cane Bay Lake Sunset

Over the last decade the southwestern portion of Summerville in Berkeley County has sprung to life, bringing new industry and international companies like Volvo, Mercedes and Boeing,  becoming the region’s third major employment hub and sprouting vibrant new communities including Nexton, Carnes Crossroads and Cane Bay Plantation, all along Hwy 17-A and Hwy 176, creating a unique corridor of innovation and growth and a great place to call home. In fact, Berkeley County has recently become the second fastest growing county in the state and continues to attract new residents.  If you’re looking for a spot where “live, work and play” are all conveniently rolled into one, put this area on your short list and come on over!

Berkeley County SCRA Applied Technologies Center

Berkeley County has officially been part of the “Charleston District” as far back as the 1700’s and as Charleston began outgrowing the downtown peninsula growth spread up I-26 to Summerville.  Close neighbors include Moncks Corner, the county seat, known for its old-fashioned hospitality, southern charm and history, which is home to the Old Berkeley County Courthouse, an Italianate building that graces the National Registry of Historic Places, Goose Creek, Hanahan and North Charleston, all who contribute to that authentic lowcountry lifestyle.

Easy access to major highways I-26 and I-95 as well as local 17-A, 176 and 52 make commuting a breeze but if you really want to enjoy the area and the breeze, grab a kayak or canoe and take to the waterways, the Berkeley County Blueways which provide an amazing one hundred and seventy five miles of scenic kayak and canoe trails, more navigable waterways than any other county in South Carolina.  Put this on your bucket list and make it happen!

Growth in the area consists of several significant master planned developments such as Nexton, Carnes Crossroads and Cane Bay Plantation, all that have gone above-and-beyond creating self-sustaining communities meeting the needs of residents and those in the surrounding vicinity.  Cutting edge technology, sophisticated healthcare, major employers, appealing retail, diverse recreation and restaurants galore create a happening scene that checks off all the boxes.

Nexton Restaurant Couple Eating

At Nexton you’ll find the mix of retail and commercial spans from banking to bicycles, high-end dining at Hall’s Chophouse to the relaxed feel of Taco Boy and a new Harris Teeter opening soon. Cane Bay Plantation has Publix and Rio Chico Mexican Restaurant among its many options with Carnes Crossroads just minutes from both.

With this growth comes investment in infrastructure, healthcare offerings and top-notch new schools.  There are numerous primary healthcare options available to all the new communities including the recently opened Roper St. Francis Berkley Hospital  at Carnes Crossroads that will provide comprehensive healthcare, an Emergency Department and is the first new hospital to open in Berkeley County in forty-five years

As for schools, Cane Bay has an Elementary, Middle and High School, all which have state-of-the-art-facilities and provide strong academic, vocational and athletic programs and Nexton Elementary, which opened in 2015, which is the region’s only Common-Sense Digital Leadership School.  Northwoods Academy, a highly regarded private school in Carnes Crossroads, provides education from preschool through 12th grade.  For adults, Charleston Southern University and Trident Technical College are just a quick drive down I-26 or Hwy 52.

Berkeley County Carnes Crossroads Commit to be Fit Event

There’s no shortage of activities in the area and the communities, from regular festivals, food truck Friday’s, concerts and movies in the park to fitness classes and farmer’s markets. Just down the road, Cypress Gardens has foot and boat trails centered around eighty acres of blackwater bald cypress and tupelo swamp or you can celebrate the area’s rich history and habit at Old Santee Canal Park. For the holidays you can schedule your tour starting now to see the famous creches on display at the Mepkin Abbey crech festival, a Trappist monastery located on a historic plantation, where you can also walk a labyrinth, stroll the gardens or purchase the mushrooms they forage onsite and save the date for Spring 2020 – April 3rd-5th- for the annual Flowertown Festival.
