School districts are a big factor when buying a new home. Being in a superior school system is not just a priority for parents with school-aged kids at home, it‘s important for everyone’s resale potential. Selecting a neighborhood with good schools is as much a challenge for locals as it is for relocating buyers that are unfamiliar with the Charleston area. The schools in the Tri-County area are quickly evolving and it’s hard to keep tabs. For years, any local real estate agent or long-term resident would tell you that Dorchester County II school district is the place to be. While Dorchester II is still an excellent choice, the list of competitively good options has grown. For instance, US News & World Report ranked Academic Magnet High School, a Charleston county school, as the #1 high school in the state. These growing options mean the list of desirable areas to live (areas with great new home communities) has also grown!

A simple Google search provides reliable sources that paint the bigger picture. This is important research for any new homebuyer or agent. The South Carolina State Department of Education website offers report cards on individual schools. By searching in the appropriate county, you can then select a particular school and compare its performance with other schools in the state. These cards analyze test scores and student/teacher ratios, providing a variety of demographics including attendance and level of teacher’s education. Websites like GreatSchools and SchoolDigger include private schools and offer more subjective reviews and opinions.

If you do your homework you’ll find a longer list of good school options and some great new neighborhood choices.
