Summerville added a new ZIP code this summer, and it seems now that part of Mt. Pleasant will too. The Town’s request to be added to the 29429 ZIP code was addressed by Mayor Linda Page at the September Town Council Meeting. Previously, residents had an Awendaw address and yet were receiving services by the Town of Mt. Pleasant—and it created a great deal of confusion for the residents.
USPS District Manager Darryl Martin explained in a letter to Mayor Page that residents in Awendaw who are in the town limits of Mt. Pleasant can use the 29429 ZIP code to change their mailing address to Mt. Pleasant. Residents should notify their correspondents, but should be aware that there may be brief delays in delivery while mail is redirected.
While many residents will be affected by the change, one community in particular that will have a new address is Ryland Homes’ Tupelo Forest, previously in Awendaw. These spacious 3-5 bedroom homes range from approximately 1,554-3639 SF and start in the mid $300s. Ryland offers one- and two-story homes with master-down floor plans. Other features available include sunrooms, bonus rooms, screen porches and front porches. Complete your personalization with an array of included options or upgrades in Ryland’s MyStyle Design Center.
Tupelo Forest is located in the Mt. Pleasant School District and is convenient to shopping, dining, beaches, golf, dog parks, hospitals, the Wando River boat ramp and downtown Charleston. Its planned amenity center will include a pool, restrooms, gas grills, nature trails, a playground and an indoor/outdoor fireplace.
While Tupelo Forest gets a new ZIP code, so do some Summerville communities, such as Carnes Crossroads and Nexton. In July 2015, the northeast territory of The Flower Town in the Pines introduced a new ZIP code: 29486. This new addition to the town is a nod to the incredible growth in the area, and therefore their expanding number of deliveries. The goal of a second number is to make the mail service in the rapidly growing area run that much smoother.
“The current Summerville ZIP code is still the same, but one part of the town is taking on a new number,” said Harry Spratlin, District Communications Coordinator for the Greater SC District of the USPS. The change is only a one digit difference, from 29483 to 29486, and the new ZIP code will cover the territory northeast of I-26. The Summerville Post Office will continue to serve both areas.
Approximately 10,000 Summerville residents received notification of the change earlier this summer, but the Post Office is graciously giving them a one-year grace period to notify correspondents and make the necessary changes to their stationery and address labels. During that time, the Postal Service will recognize both the new and old ZIP codes in an effort to make the transition as smooth and convenient as possible for everyone.
In 2013, South Carolina was ranked 11th overall for population growth, and, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Berkeley County is the 35th fastest growing county in the country. Now with the incoming Volvo Cars facility (and their future suppliers) and Gerber Childrenswear LLC, it’s only going to expand further with more and more residential and business addresses. By mid-2016, Gerber plans to invest $33m into Berkeley County to build a fully operational 477,000 SF facility in the area, and with it create 45 new jobs. Volvo is right behind Gerber with plans to invest $500m into its first-ever U.S. plant, also in Berkeley County. The company hopes to begin construction on the new SC facility later this year, with the expectation that it will be fully operational by 2018. Not only is Volvo anticipating to bring 2,000 new jobs to the state within the next decade (4,000 by 2030), it also will bring with it hundreds of new suppliers and thousands more additional jobs—which means plenty of new residences will be built, too.
