Buffalo Lake - Summers Corner
At the intersection of 17-A, Hwy 61 and 642 you’ll discover a unique fusion of town and country that provides a true lowcountry lifestyle. West Summerville provides convenient employment opportunities with natural beauty making this a desired new home destination. Its close proximity to historic plantations and the ACE Basin, and the fact that it’s a hop, skip and a jump to Volvo, Boeing and Mercedes, should move it to the top of your prospect list too.
Dorchester County comprises the western-most portion of the Greater Charleston’s tri-county region where Summerville, often referred to as “Flower Town in the Pines,” has dominated as the most prominent township for many a year. It’s thriving economy largely attributed to the easy access provided by both I-26 and I-95 to major employers and Dorchester County’s highly acclaimed school district continues to attract new real estate development, pushing and consciously growing these boundaries further west.
Summerville has a unique history. This area was initially settled in the 1700’s when Charleston residents sought a cool summer retreat from the heat and bugs of the coastal plantations and this same appeal remains today with the shade of pine forests and moss-draped live oaks … a relaxed community where uncultivated Lowcountry meets the boundaries of town.
You’ll find blackwaters from the Ashley River that widen into a tidal estuary and numerous first-class historic sites like
Middleton Place Plantation with its famous gardens, and neighboring
Magnolia Plantation and
Drayton Hall. Summerville is also known to be the
birth place of sweet tea. You’ll find many nods to this historic designation, from an annual festival in its honor to the world’s largest mason jar of the “champagne of the south” that holds over 2,500 gallons. The local calendar is always chock full of events supporting locals to these communities too like the Big Obstacle Challenge at Summers Corner which raises funds for the Acuity Dental Foundation’s Innovation Awards.
Middleton Plantation
Schools in this area are plentiful and highly sought after.
Dorchester II is one of the highest performing school districts in the area and many of the master-planned neighborhoods in the area boast of their schools; Sand Hill Elementary, Rollings Middle School of the Arts, Beech Hill Elementary, Gregg Middle School and Ashley Ridge High School to name a few.
Private education possibilities abound here as well with Pinewood Preparatory School located nearby and The Oaks Christian Academy, Trinity Classical Academy and Summerville Catholic School all in the vicinity. This area is also home to Charleston Southern University and Trident Technical College with College of Charleston and The Citadel right up the road. Many of the area master-planned communities also include incredible recreational options and convenient amenities that they offer make available to the general public.
